My eyes were really on the clock, seconds ticking down to the wedding! I made it on time, but just.

The attempted shortcut of my return trip. The pavement narrowed, I drove on. The warning signs disappeared, I drove on. The pavement gave way to smooth gravel, no sweat. Then there was a "NOT RECOMMENDED FOR PASSENGER CARS" sign. Then this was where I decided to turn around.
This is what I had already driven over! I took the lowered Corolla. It was too bad, because the road only became bad near the top of the pass, and I had already come 40 miles or so.
Yakima Indian Reservation, 3:30AM Light in the east, nobody around, and absolute silence except for the ticking of the Corolla's cooling exhaust following a 90mph descent down Satus Pass!
Shortly after 4AM just east of the Dalles. Also shortly before my close encounter with a suicidal deer who tried pretty hard to run into the side of my car!
This picture is true to my memory of the sleep-deprived return trip!
